Finding Common Ground

As students, we say that we feel at home anywhere – there is no room for borders in our minds. We are active on social networks, sharing our ideas across continents.

Yet, we find ourselves stuck: We stay in our own networks. The place we actually live in – we only know it from one perspective. We have no points of contact with the people who live in our immediate neighborhood.

We decided that we wanted to change this: Therefore, we talked to people we’ve never met about the borders they have actually overcome or which borders they would like to see overcome in our society.

Borders also refer to migration – a topic we feel uncomfortable talking about even with our closest friends. We wanted to meet our five interlocutors from Mainz and Jerusalem on a personal level. In places, they feel comfortable in. Then we broke their routine by talking about migration.

What we were able to capture with our camera was the realization that our city is our common ground. Despite our different backgrounds and attitudes, there is at least this one unifying element. And many more, but these you will have to discover yourselves.
