Laura never really felt at home in France. Instead, she had always been attracted to other countries and foreign people. She doesn’t know where her interest comes from, but she had it already as a child: Whenever she heard people on the street talking in an unknown language, she wished she could speak it too. Her first experience abroad was a trip to Scotland when she was twelve years old. Seeing new places was so fulfilling to her that she didn’t want to go back home. Since then, she took every chance she could get to travel abroad or do an exchange. She loves that in Europe there are so many different countries, languages and cultures existing close together. She’s a big fan of the Eurovision Song Contest and has been learning Italian since the victory of Italy in 2021. Sometimes, Laura feels that she doesn’t fit in because she talks too much and too loud for other people, especially for Germans. Recently, for the first time she noticed that she misses France. Not the country, but her friends. This is what home means to her: Living at the same place as beloved people. Still, she doesn’t know where her home will be in the future – but it will definitely be in Europe.
Laura ne s’est jamais vraiment sentie chez elle en France. Au contraire, elle a toujours été attirée par d’autres pays et des personnes étrangères. Elle ne sait pas d’où lui vient cet intérêt, mais elle l’avait déjà dans son enfance : Chaque fois qu’elle entendait des gens dans la rue parler dans une langue étrangère, elle souhaitait pouvoir la parler aussi. Sa première expérience à l’étranger a été un voyage en Écosse lorsqu’elle avait douze ans. Voir de nouveaux endroits était si gratifiant pour elle qu’elle ne voulait plus rentrer chez elle. Depuis lors, elle a saisi toutes les occasions de voyager à l’étranger ou de participer à un échange. Elle adore le fait qu’en Europe, il y a tant de pays, de langues et de cultures différentes qui cohabitent. Elle est une grande fan de l’Eurovision et apprend l’italien depuis la victoire de l’Italie en 2021. Parfois, Laura a l’impression de ne pas s’intégrer parce qu’elle parle trop et trop fort pour les autres, surtout pour les Allemands. Récemment, pour la première fois, elle a remarqué que la France lui manquait. Pas le pays, mais ses amis. C’est ce que signifie se sentir à sa place pour elle : vivre au même endroit que les gens qu’elle aime. Elle ne sait pas encore où elle se sentira chez elle à l’avenir, mais ce sera certainement en Europe.
